Problem- Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea

Cinematography:
This music video has very conventional cinematography to a pop music video as the video has a lot of close ups of the two main artists this is very conventional to the genre of pop. The reason that we will see close ups of the main artists is to highlight the fact that they are the main artists in the music video. I think that this works well in this music video a it clearly highlights who is singing and gives you a face to match with the voice.

We also see a long shot quite regularly used this could show that the main artists have support when dealing with their "problem". I think that this shot is used well by the director and shows that the artists have good support.

We also see a close up of the two main artists next to each other this shows that they are united and close. The director would have chose to use this shot to point out that the main artists are close ans they can fight their "problems".

Mise en scene:

The mise en scene in this music video creates a very upbeat feel. We see high key lighting used regularly. This will be used to make the audince get a better understanding of the genre and the tone of the music. We also see bright colors used regularly this will be used for the same reason.

Although we see high key lighting used a few times we also see low key lighting with a sort of spotlight used this will be used to create a mood although the mood will be a very different mood from the one created by the high key lighting. The mood created by this lighting will be a little more sinister as the main artist is speaking about her problems.

Editing:

The editing in this music video changes from fast paced to slow paced this is usually changed to match the speed of the music and this could be why the director has chosen to do this.

Music Video 2

The song I will be looking at will be heart skips at beat.

Mise en scene:
The mise en scene in this video is very good as it really sets the tone for the video. It features lots of colours and light colours to really show what sort of video it will be and is. The location of the music video is at a skate park with lots of graffiti in the background in blues and reds to really add lots of colour to the video therefore making it a really good location in my opinion it is also a little un ordinary and gives it a unique feel.

The costumes that we see are really quiet plain from the main artist except we see him wearing a hat this is very good because it gives the audience something to identify him by as now when the audience see a hat like that one they will think of the main artist therefore it is a very clever decision to use this. And by using plain clothes more attention will be on the hat.

Camerawork:
In this music video the camerawork really portrays the main artist as a very happy and smiley character. We know this because we see lots of close ups of him smiling. Again this is very good as it really portrays the main artist as a good person.

The camerawork also shows the main artist as a very supportive person and a generally good person.
Editing the editing in this music video is very fast paced and really portrays the main artist.

Two music videos

The first video I will be looking at will be: Best song ever by one direction.

Mise en scene:
The Mise en scene in this video is very good and really gives you a strong idea of the genre of the music video and the way that the band are portrayed. We see a lot of high key lighting in this video this really shows the tone of the video we see no darkness which really shows the youth of the band and how it is a happy song and video.

We see a studio setting used for the location of the music video this really helps the band to create the right video as they will have a lot of space. Also they will be able to easily customize the rooms well to get the shots that they want this is a benefit because if they used a room already customized they may not be able to change it in the way that they want.

We also see a less innocent side of the band and a side that really shows their age and how they like to mess about and not be so serious all the time. This has benefits because it really shows that they are still only young and like to mess about and not be so serious all the time.

Camerawork.
The camera work really shows that the band are having a good time and are really united we also see lots of direct address. This has a lot of benefits because it really shows that the band are showing the world what they are like and are aware they are doing it. Also it keeps the audience engaged in the music video.

We also see lots of shots of the band a whole in the same shot. This really shows that the band are in unison as you do not see them one person at a time and you can really see them as group.

We also see lots of close ups of smiles. This really shows that the are enjoying them selves and also shows the genre as it is upbeat and happy.

Editing:
The editing in this video is very good as it really shows the band as a whole being happy and messing about. It also shows the people that they are around warming to them as the video goes on.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin stated that there were really three types of music video these are: Illustration, Amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration:
Illustration is when the music cuts to the beat. The images in the music video shows the meaning or feelings of the lyrics. Some examples of an Illustration video are:

This video is an illustration video because the lyrics are telling a story and the images that we are seeing on the screen and acting out this story.

Amplification:
This is when the film is on and off cut. The lyrics amplify the lyrics. Some examples of an amplification video is:

Disjuncture:
This is when the video cuts off the beat. The images do not relate to the music video at all usally only used by well know artists.

Kindest cut by Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis focused on editing in music videos and in Films.

  Music Videos:
. Order of shots-unconventional shifts more freely used and follow no real order.
. The video follows multiple paths
. You do not really need to understand the characters arrival not really at a set time.
. The video doesn't need a story
. The star is the main focus

Hollywood films:
. Single clear path in the word
. Conventional shot order
. Film draws audience into the narrative

The artist being the main focus.

Multiple paths:

This is a very good examples of multiple paths.

The video doesn't need a story:

These are both examples of a music video that doesn't follow a story line.

Hollywood films:

These are very good examples of a clear pathway.

Low budget ideas 2: A-ha! Imogen Heap

Music video:
A-ha Imogen Heap

Camerawork:
The opening shot we see is somebody sitting on the top of a fence or a tree. I think that this is a very good opening shot because it really sets the mood for the whole of the music video because it is very strange and dark  music video and this really shows the audience the tone of the music video.

We also see a shot of a red hair and a woman behind the red hair this is a very good shot because there is a lack of colour in this music video and with the addition of red it really shows what mood they are really trying to create because the red could symbolize danger and to stay away.

Mise en scene:
The mise en scene in this video is very good and really brings the whole video together.

We see a shot a some red finger nails. This really adds some meaning to the video as it could show that the fingers are are dnagerous because we have seen no colour for the majority of the whole video and the red finger nails really mean danger.

The lighting in this video is very consistent as it is very low key because it again really made the mood set in and gave the audience a very good idea of how the video is going to be as it not a bright happy song therefore the video follows this very well.

low budget music videos- one The Fix-Just got paid

What I can learn from these two music videos:
Music Video 1:
The Fix-Just Got Paid:

Mise En Scene:
At the begging of the music video the group used a MTV logo to introduce the video. This was a very good way of starting the music video because it really gives a professional touch to the video.

The opening shot of the group is very good because it gives the audience the feeling like they are really in a big stage as they are in bright spotlight with lots of shadows and I feel again it adds a professionalism to the video.

I thought that having the group in the same or similar costumes was also very effective to creating a professional music video. Also it makes the group look a lot more together and a real group.

Camarawork:

The closing shot was also very good because it was pretty much a replica of the opening shot that we saw. But it was the group turnt around and I thought that it was a very good idea.

We see lots of direct address from the group. This is a very good way of getting the audience involved in the music video it also is very conventional to see in a music video.

Editing:
There are lots of cuts in this video which i think is very good to make the video look very professional and I thought that it was very good to make this video look professional.

Green day 21 guns music video analysis

Video:

Camerawork:

The first shot we see is a man sitting down with a bullet in his hands we then see the camera cut to a close up of the bullet is his hands. This shot tells us a few things about the man and what he could be doing. He could be contemplating using the bullet for bad things like a murder or maybe he could be a soldier going into his next stint at war. This would be used as the opening shot by the director to make the audience ask these kinds of questions.

We also see a shot of the whole of the band standing playing the instruments. This is very conventional to the rock genre. This shot shows the unity of the rock band. This is probably the reason that we see this shot and maybe to follow the convention of a rock music video.

We see a close up of a lot of smashed glass on a side this could symbolize the feelings of the two artists who are being shot at as that is their home and they must be extremely scared as they could be shot just like the glass.
Mise En Scene:

The mise en scene in this music video is very strong and really gives you an idea of what the music is about. The costume in this video is very dark to really help echo the feelings that the artists must be feeling. I think that this is why the director chose this costume.

The lighting in this music video is very dark. I think that this is the same reason that the costume is so dark. We also see as the music video goes on the lighting gets darker and darker until at the end it more like a spotlight on the person singing just showing how the homeowner is feeling. We also see that the light is coming from the bullet holes just showing the damage.

Editing:

The editing in this clip uses lots of cuts from the main singers face to the action of the gun shots.

Assignment Brief

The brief for my media coursework is:
A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with the following:

A cover for its release as part of a digipak (Cardboard CD cover)

A magazine advertisement for the digipak

Paradise-Coldplay

Mise en scene:

The mise en scene is very different in this music video to what you will usually see in music videos of the same genre. The costumes that are used are very different as we see the main vocalist (or so it would seem) in a elephant costume. This gives the audience a good idea about the music video as it is talking about paradise and we see the elephant escape from the zoo this is the reason why te director chose to use this costume. I think that this is a very good and original idea.

The location of the music video changes as we follow the elephant around the world to find his/her 'paradise'. We first see the elephant in a zoo locked up behind bars and looking very sad because of this we then begin to feel sympathy for the elephant as he is obviously very sad because of this. We then see him visit various different locations as he escapes from the zoo. We see him pass through the London underground, Heath row airport boarding a plane, walking the streets, riding down a road, we then see him in the jungle with his other elephants and he looks happy as he has found his paradise compared to the zoo in which he was unhappy.

The lighting is high key throughout the music video. This is mainly because it is shot outside during the day. Therefore at the beginning of the music video it doesn't really fit but towards the end it fits the music video very well.

Camerawork:

We see a long shot of a heard of buffalo whilst the sun sets and the word 'paradise' this shot could give us a very good idea of what the main artist or the person we will see in this video and what their idea of paradise is.

We also see a close up of the elephant counting down days. This shot shows us that the video could be about the elephant trying to get out or waiting to get out of the zoo to try to find paradise. This shot was choose to show that the elephant is very unhappy.

Editing:

We see lots of cuts from different locations to show the elephant is moving around from various different locations.

The editing is also very slow although their is a point in the video where the lyrics are being held up by the elephant.
